Kevin Keller by Dan Parent

5.0

Age recommendation: 10+

This collection of comic books was the beginning of the resurgence of Archie Comics, and I am grateful for it. The format had grown stale over the years, and this was just the kick it needed. While keeping the same style Archie is famous for, they introduced Keven Keller, the Archie universe's first openly gay character, to Riverdale. For middle schooler's hitting puberty and coming to grips with their sexuality, a positive role model for themselves (if they're gay), or a stand in for someone different than them (if they're not), is a great thing. The fact that Kevin is gay doesn't make anyone in Riverdale think of him differently, and is just a facet of who the character is. The biggest ripple this "revelation" has on any of the characters, is that Veronica has to reorient her feelings after she learns, because she initially has a crush on him. Highly recommended for both it's positive message, and great storytelling.
