Raising Steam by Terry Pratchett
3.0

The steam engine has arrived in Ankh-Morpork. Dick Simnel has mastered the sine and the cosine and this has led to the Iron Girder, the first successful steam engine. Simnel has brought his engine to the city to get the backing of Harry King. Of course, it attracts a lot of attention from not only the common folk who line up to get a glimpse and maybe a ride, but to Lord Vetinari. The Patrician appoints Moist von Lipwig to oversea the steam engine business and set up the train lines. Moist knows that you cannot say no to a request from Vetinari so he is off across the country fighting bandits and dwarf extremists to get the railroad built.

I find it kind of sad that this is the last Discworld novel we will see from Sir Terry Pratchett. While I don't think these last few novels have been quite the same caliber as the earlier ones, clearly because of Pratchett's battle with Alzheimer's, I will miss reading new stories about some of my favorite characters. There are some great Pratchett insights into religious extremists and the rise of industry in this book. His whit and turn of phrase will definitely be missed.
