Daughter of the Drowned Empire by Frankie Diane Mallis

5.0

Have you ever purposely dragged a book out? Could I have finished this two days sooner? Yes. Did I want to? No.
I loved the world that Frankie created. There is so much detail in the world and within the mythological, historical, and magical elements of Lumeria. I fully fell into this world and was honestly not ready to leave. I will be the first to admit that I do not instinctively gravitate towards magical or fantasy elements in books, but this has fully changed my perception. I enjoy the constraints, the freedom, and am excited to see where the plot and sub-plots go from here.
As far as characters go, Lyr was a likable character but also had her faults. There were times that I wanted to grab her by her shoulders and give her a good shake, and every main character deserves that at least once, in my opinion. I love a character with room for growth. And Lyr. Is. It. I am excited to see how her self-talk and internal monologue evolve as the series continues on. I am also ready for her to kind of shake off her familial responsibilities as she steps into her role, but I also know that will come with her character's development throughout the series.
Rhyan. Okay. I am here to learn more about his character development and his backstory. I am ready. I love him. I truly am invested. Enough said. I cannot say more. I will not spoil this.
I could also imagine the supporting characters were so perfectly in my mind. Especially Morgana, Meera, Tristan, Naria, and Arianna. I am over Tristan though, honestly. Pffft.
Side note, I am ready to be BFFs with Galen and Haleika, and I honestly wish we saw more of them. I kind of forgot about them at one point, and then they cropped up again, but our girl, Lyr, also had a lot going on. So it was fair. However, I am eager to get to know them better as the series continues on.
I ultimately cannot wait for the next book in the series, and I wish I would have read this book sooner! I would definitely recommend this book, and I loved the setting, plot, and characters that Frankie has shared with us so much.
