Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

4.5

I’ve never actually read this before, although familiar with the basic story. Charlotte Bronte’s descriptive writing is superb - you get a great sense of the places and the characters. And yes, it’s looong on melodrama, but I was surprised by the amount of self-deprecating irony, especially in Jane’s thoughts. But I can’t give it 5 stars because at the end of the day, Jane is too perfect, too wise and perceptive, too unbelievable for a 19 year old who’s spent most of her childhood in care and in a harsh school. Presumably she’s the alter ego that Charlotte Brontë would have liked to be herself.
