Before Watchmen: Comedian/Rorschach by Brian Azzarello

3.0

The 'Watchmen' universe doesn't speak to me, but this volume looks great.

I'm not one for cynicism and edginess. I used to be, I guess, before I saw how hard the world can be. It was titillating to dip my toes into nihilism, feeling like I had a greater insight than that of the "shiny, happy people."

In other words, I used to be an adolescent.

Now, I'm an adult. I've realized that any jackass can whine about the darkness in the world, but that it's riskier to light a lamp and try to shine.

'Watchmen' is all about whining and edginess for edginess's sake. I'm simply not interested. So, why three stars? Because this comic looks great. There's some top-notch comic art happening in these pages, with more than one sequence that drew me out of the narrative to enjoy the beauty of the presentation. Even if you don't particularly care for 'Watchmen,' it's worth it to at least pick up this volume in the library and page through it. There's some good work here.
