I feel as though this was mainly a filler book to prepare us for the finale but I enjoyed it all the same.

The pacing of this book was rather slow, not a lot was happening, just a lot of information being told and then problems being solved unreasonably fast. Parts of this book were predictable, I kind of figured that when Magnus sent Nic out that he was going to die and then that was going to affect Magnus and Cleo's relationship. I also knew that Nic wouldn't permanently be dead and that Lucia's magic would heal him in time.
But can I just say that the whole curse on Cleo about dying in childbirth was just so random. It didn't make sense that Elena gave birth to Emilia and didn't die but then the curse worked when Cleo was born. It just didn't add up, it was just a road block to get in the way of Cleo and Magnus's relationship.

Speaking of Cleo and Magnus they were just all over the place in this book. In their argument I just felt that Magnus was being far too harsh and unfair. I was also just becoming immensely sick of him just drinking his sorrows away and being petty and childish. Stop getting drunk and actually help do something useful!

None of the characters really went through any immense development but I must say I am warming up to Lucia a little. I've always found her unbearable and annoying but she saved Nic's life and at least now she's owned up to her mistakes. But I do not want Jonas and Lucia to be a thing in the next novel, can't they just be friends without having a romantic relationship?

Also what happened with Magnus and Taran? So much was set up at the end of Frozen Tides and I thought there was going to be a big stand off between them involving Cleo but then nothing...It was rather underwhelming actually. Taran tried to kill him a couple of times and then they had one conversation and all of a sudden everything was settled?
Also another thing that was set up in the last novel was King Gaius's death, but guess what bitches? He's alive! Why and how and who gave this man the right to survive?! Honestly he's not that big of a threat anymore and neither is Amara for that matter, so why not just kill them off? Gaius has had his time and now it's time for him to finally go. Why was there a trend of people supposedly dying and then coming back to life? Just stay dead god dammit it would make things so much simpler. XD

Tbh I kinda thought that Olivia had a role in stealing the air and earth kindred. Although I didn't think Selia was controlling her. I kind of figured Selia was evil, especially after she killed that woman. But I always thought that Olivia had aligned with Timotheus to take the orbs back to the Sanctuary so the gods couldn't be released and maybe they could help restore the sanctuary? But turns out I'm wrong and now all the gods have harbored Nic's, Cleo's, Taran's and Olivia's bodies. Kinda sucks that Nic and Ashur just got one another back and now they're parted again. *Sighs*

Over all this was an enjoyable book but definitely. not my favourite of the series. Also Morgan Rhodes I do not appreciate that cliff hanger at all.
