The First Bright Thing by J.R. Dawson

Did not finish book. Stopped at 14%.
I was given this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

On paper, this book has everything that I love: a magical circus, queer found family, and an epic story through time. I loved the opening scene of the circus being set up and the ringmaster stepping out into the spotlight. The imagery was beautiful and I felt myself drawn in. Unfortunately, though, I just didn't connect with the writing style on this one. I would describe it as fluffy and feely. There are lots of people who want to sigh their way through a book, but I only want the occasional one when a certain moment really hits me. Even though this one didn't work for me, I think there's definitely an audience for it! If you're looking for a sweet, queer historical fantasy, consider trying this one!
