The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

funny sad tense fast-paced

4.0

"We found ourselves veiled and separated from our friends."

I picked up this book last night because I wanted a quick read but boy did I not expect that this one is dense with information and lessons. Dense but in a good way.

This is a memoir of Marjane Satrapi, an Iranian woman who grew up witnessing the Islamic Revolution. She is from a privileged family but that did not exempt them from the terrors of the war. Her friends and relatives have died from bombing, others from torture by the government. However, this book is really personal and the author is from a well-off family so you wouldn't see the extreme side of the war.

I loved reading about her childhood, especially the scenes where she's so rebellious and honest which caused her a lot of trouble. Her childhood antics gave me a good laugh.

I think this is a timely read for me because of what's currently happening in Iran. There's a scene where the family was watching the news when the reporter mentioned that "Women's hair emanates rays that excite men." I suddenly recalled the news about Mahsa Amini.

All in all, a worthwhile read.
