This book is very much Divergent/HG coded. It doesn’t feel like plagiarism like other books do, more like a ton of inspiration was taken from those stories.
I usually understand other people’s hate for books but I honestly don’t get why this book gets so much of it. Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it badly written? No. Is it super original? No. I still liked the storyline and enjoyed reading it very much. This isn’t a 5 star read for me. But it’s definitely a book I would re-read as a palate cleanser between other books. I will say that even if I enjoyed it, I didn’t feel as close to the characters as I do other books. Idk if this is the author’s first book but it feels like it is. Writing a book is hard, and if it’s their first book, I think readers should give the author some leeway and be gentle. You don’t have to love the book (to each their own) but being nice about it won’t hurt anyone.
I don’t think it should have been marketed as a dystopian story. Yes, it takes place in the future with more tech than we have today, after a Great War that destroyed the world. But apart from tiny snippets to advance the plot, there are no politics. It also shouldn’t be marketed as a forbidden romance or enemies to lovers. It’s not that at all. No one is forbidding anyone from dating certain people and one party doesn’t isn’t even aware of the “enemy” part of the love story. I don’t get why Cross gets so much hate. I’ve seen someone call him a r*pist. He’s not. Is he a bit shallow? Maybe. Is he the most romantic, swoon-worthy guy? Not really. But is he a bad guy? Definitely not. The spice that happens in the book is very much consensual. I think it’s Wren that needs a bit more depth to her character. She feels quite entitled from the start, which is a pro and con since she knows she’s strong but she gets too cocky. But she’s the one who believes Cross should fall to his knees and devote his life to her as soon as she sees him. Cross shouldn’t get the hate here.
In short, I liked this book and will most likely read it again. Just don’t expect something brand new out of the plot. You get what you expect. I will also say it’s happened that my opinion of a book changes after reading 2-3 times. We’ll see.
