The Darkest Pleasure by Gena Showalter

5.0

LOVED this book! Reyes is such a poor, tortured soul. It was amazing to see inside his mind. I always love how the various demons have not only different personalities from their warrior but also from the other “box demons”! Even though the demons seem to be more animalistic and run more off of evolutionary instinct than being a complex, intelligent creature like the humanoid demons you see in most media- you still are able to form an odd emotional connection to the demons. I’m honestly so glad they made it to where they can’t be separated and I truly hope they don’t change that in later books because I get attached to the demon itself too! &It makes me kinda worried they’ll do just that with how Pain is “transported”. (Expanded on below!)

You can tell from the moment Danika is introduced earlier in the series that she is going to be perfect for Reyes/Pain! Her being the ACTUAL Eye (rather than just leading them to it/being key to finding it) was such an amazing twist! Though, I wish they had explored where Pain was “transported to” during -cough cough- more and what it meant for separating the warriors and demons. I’m hoping it somehow is explored further in later books but I’m honestly not sure how that’ll work because 1) how would they tie where Pain is transported to during sex and another warriors romance story lol &2) This also leads to the question: “So, does this mean the demon can be separated from the warrior without killing the warrior?” Because Pain doesn’t have a physical body- so if he’s being “transported” they have to mean like conscious wise, which would be Pain being separated from Reyes. Even if only for a short amount of time (this could just be a plot hole and I’m thinking too much into it lol)

I love how everything is slowly falling together! It’s amazing to see how the titans, the angels (who arnt controlled by the gods OR titans?! WHO CONTROLS THEM?! HOW DO THEY FIT IN?!), the underworld (and all it’s demons), the hunters (WHO ARE RAN BY A DEMON?!? &it’s HOPE out of all of them) and the Lords of the Underworld are all connected. They’re fleshing Galen out nicely and he was SERIOUSLY a twist I didn’t see coming!!

I love that Aeron didn’t kill anyone but still got back to his old self in a way that didn’t feel overly plot device-y. I genuinely wasn’t sure what decision Paris would make and I’m super curious to see how he manages to get Sienna back.

Speaking of ships that seem impossible to make work: I wonder how they’ll address the Aeron x Legion ship?! (I’m making their ship tag #Aergion ☺️
