The Summer Pact by Emily Giffin

3.0

I received this book as an ARC from Ballantine Books as a Goodreads Giveaway.

I was not familiar with the author prior to reading this novel. Overall I enjoyed it, and it was an easy read. Easy, as in the writing flowed well.

The novel deals with grief and loss of innocence as mentioned on the back of the book. With that said, there are trigger warnings for people of suicide and alcohol abuse.

The novel was written from the perspective of three different characters who have been part of a foursome of friends through college. Tragedy hits, the three friends who are left, make a pact to be there for each other no matter what.

The novel involves traveling to exotic locals, working through grief/mental health issues, and lasting friendship even when things get difficult to talk about.

I enjoyed the novel well enough with a cozy 3 stars, but these heavy topics were only dealt with superficially and not in depth. It has a beach read feel, with heavy topics that are dealt with in a rush during the last 1/4th of the novel. The ending is a short chapter that takes less than two minutes to read.

There is definitely romance in the novel with some unexpected turns and a HEA ending vibe.
