The Girls at 17 Swann Street by Yara Zgheib

5.0

TW: eating disorders/ed treatment center

Anna does not belong at 17 Swann Street. She was a dancer. Just because she wanted to be skinny does not mean she should be here. She is not dying.

This book was haunting and beautiful and dreamy beyond belief. It did not sensationalize or glorify the horror that was Anna's eating disorder. We got the chance to get in her head, but at the same time, we could see her situation from the outside.

One of the most brilliant things about this novel was the way it was written. I was a bit confused by the formatting at first, but it, more than anything, successfully got me into Anna's mental state. I can understand that, as someone with mental illness, it can be hard to "get it" from the outside. I felt like there was a sympathetic way to get to the truth of her issues, and the author truly succeeded with that.

Five full stars for this dreamy, honest novel.
