Lord of Chaos by Robert Jordan

I don't know if the misogyny just jumped out at me only now or if it's so much worse in this book.

Egwyne and Nyneave, and even Elaine, are clearly also ta'veren. The story of the world is being changed by them and in many ways is revolving around them. In fact, I think you could show that so far, they've impacted the plot of this series far more than Mat has (aside from him tooting that horn that once). So let's just give the TV show folks credit for recognizing that and making the women ta'veren as well.

What is WITH Rand's focus on not wanting Maidens (that is, female warriors - also, what is WITH them being called Maidens?!) to die while other humans are dropping like flies all around him? And these women who have devoted their lives to protection are being sexualized throughout this book. Everyone they meet has to be teased.

There's also a scene with Aes Sedai (detailed redacted due to spoiler) where they're all standing around staring at each others' bare chests and assessing them. This is a politically and historically charged moment, and they're taking a moment to admire each other voluptuousness? NO!

There was also just a lot of lazy writing, in my opinion. The fighting of the ashaman in the last scenes - it was just written lazily.

Either I allowed the worldbuilding and plot to blind me to it before, or the writing or editing took a big nosedive this book. I had a lot of groaning - a lot.

Good points: I like that the "big bad" was harder to identify in this book. I am excited about not knowing where Marigan went. I'm excited about the new leader of the Salidar group. The big plot lines were good, the world building was good - it was just the writing and the world details that stunk here.
