The Broken Girls by Simone St. James

3.0

I think the biggest issue with this book was the ghost story element. Mary Hand barely factored into the story - remove her, and it’s an interesting “past meets present” murder mystery. What was necessary about her? We barely get her backstory, we only see her appear a few times, and the things she does have no bearing on the plot. She literally could be taken out and it wouldn’t change the narrative at all.

That being said, the moments when the plot took unexpected turns (that were NOT supernaturally based) were good, and the two murder mysteries unfolding on parallel paths complimented each other well. The author is just trying to do TOO much with the ghost thing added in.
