The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel
3.0
Interesting, if plodding, read. Not quite as inspirational, I think, as the authors (and those who made it into a movie) seem to believe.
Real life, of course, rarely offers the dramatic reveal, the tidy ending--but it's hard to ignore that so much attention was paid to sparing cultural monuments while the machinery that brought death to so many living, vibrant people was allowed to continue to the bitter end.
