The Shy Little Kitten by Gustaf Tenggren, Cathleen Schurr

3.0

A barn cat and her kittens go out for a walk, but one kitten, shyly keeping her eyes downcast, encounters a mole that her mother and rest of her litter overlooked. Not too shy to make friends, the kitten is introduced to a frog by the mole, and then a puppy and a squirrel, before returning to her family.

Schurr’s story ends with an all animal picnic and a jump in the pond. While this is a bit unrealistic—with the exceptions of tigers, cats consider water immersion an anathema—the young audience for this book will be so delighted with the cuteness of Tenggren’s “roly-poly” animals that they will ignore this improbability.
