nyky 's review for:
Capitalism: A Short History
by Jürgen Kocka
WTF. This book was really good history of the development of the capitalism but went off the rails in the last two chapters to become a sycophantic enumeration of the benefits of capitalism while simultaneously ignoring other movements like democratic socialism, etc. Also ignoring or downplaying economic success of socialist and communist governments.
The book ends with the claim 'every region, every civilization gets the capitalism it deserves" which presumable covers the highly exploited Global South which the book talks about only to conclude to deserve it.
Normally I give a lot of leeway in a book and even less than idea theories I am ok with but this is pure pro capitalist propaganda wrapped up in a reformist bow. And I saw that as someone who is skeptical of both capitalism and socialism!
