The Night Rainbow by Claire King

3.0

I'm torn between giving this 3 1/2 to 4 stars really. The setting for the book is southern france and the descriptions of the landscape and the food really make you feel you are there with the main character Pea. Pea is a five year old and the book is told from her perspective. her father has died and her mother is heavily pregnant and withdrawn from the world and Pea. Pea tries to make her mother happy by cleaning and doing things she thinks are right, but a five years old what really is the right thing. While out walking across the low meadow and windy hill Pea meets Claude a neighbour and they form a friendship. now this is where i have some issues with the book, Pea is five years old and she talks and acts sometimes like an adult which for me at times makes the book a bit jarring. that being said as the book progressed and certain things became apparent (i don't want to give anything away) this sort of explained some things that a first didn't seem right. all in all i enjoyed the book its written beautifully and emotionally and for a first book the author has achieved heartfelt book and so would search out other books by this author.
