The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel
1.0
This book is a major slog to get through. Although it's only 468 pages, it feels like double that. Perhaps if there had been less repetition (okay, we understand that Broud hates Ayla, now move on!) and more even writing, the book would have moved quicker. As it is, some scenes are written beautifully, with vivid descriptions of the landscape. Other scenes are almost incomprehensible, such as the scientific, anthropological descriptions of the Clan's physical appearance.
Some parts of the book were entertaining and interesting, but for the most part this book was just not for me. I don't even care that after nearly 500 pages, the story ends on a cliffhanger. I have zero interest in finding out what happens to Ayla in the next book, because I know there's just going to be more brutality toward women.
