This isn't a 5 star rating in the sense that I'll always be thinking about this book because it changed my life, but more in the sense that it was just a thoroughly great experience. I didn't realise until I'd started reading it, although it had been on my radar as seeming interesting for quite some time, that this was also the same author as The Passage series. There's something about Cronin's writing that really draws me in and it really held up all throughout this story. I could really picture everything vividly and it had a lot of elements I really enjoy. It's been a so-so year for finding true gems and this has managed to be a saving grace as the year is almost over.
