Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

Lord save me from whoever decided that all shapeshifter love interests have to be Like Thatâ„¢.

Ok look this book had a lot of good [or at least decent parts]. Although we don't actually get a lot of explanation for things here in the first book, I think the author did some interesting things with the world building, especially in how she portrayed vampires which is definitely different than most things I've seen before. I also liked how the world fluctuates between tech and magic and it's interesting to see the things people have to do to deal with that. Kate is so fair a fairly two-dimensional but still enjoyable character. I think I could definitely grow to like her if it wasn't for one thing ...

Fucking Curran. [bangs head on desk] W H Y
SpoilerListen I just don't have any patience for this alpha male bullshit [which like ...isn't even how wolves/pack animals ACTUALLY BEHAVE IN THE WILD and was first observed in zoos and then went on to RUIN MY FUCKING LIFE but I digress] and the fact that I know she is going to go on to be in a relationship with him after the way he treated her in this book is just infuriating and I can't deal with it. Ugh. Why do y'all eat this shit up? It's so unhealthy.
I almost want to lower my rating to two stars just because of that but it was overall a well-written book and I feel like it does just barely deserve more than that.

Anyway, I'm gonna drop this series and just re-read October Daye at some point because it seems to be basically the same thing but better written and also Toby actually has good taste in men, something that is truly a rarity among female urban fantasy protagonists.
