There are some interesting things about this book (characters and moral questions etc) but ultimately I felt like this was far to slow and introspective for your average student.  I agree with others that this could be a good classroom book club title… but kids who pick this up for pleasure might struggle.  Sadly, this is why I like the state level readers’ choice titles because students ultimately pick.  Newberry once again picking books that adults like.
