The Luminaries by Susan Dennard

4.0

When I was growing up I was dying to read books about girls who were just like me. They would have glasses, be unbelievably shy, and absolutely a people pleaser. That is 100% Winnie Wednesday from this book. And because of who she is as a character, I loved her immediately.

Winnie is absolutely determined to free her family from the exile put on them by the other Luminary families. In order to do that? She must take the hunters trials. But she has only one shot to do it: on the month she turns 16. And if she fails? That was her only shot. Period.

The stakes are already high because Winnie has had no training in four years. But she has to help her family. She has to save herself. But in the meantime hunters are showing up dead. And there’s a new threat roaming the woods. A threat no one has seen except Winnie and a handful of other people. Add in her ex-best friend Jay and you have a super cute story about a glasses wearing awkward people pleaser who I wanted to protect at all costs.

I cannot tell you enough times how much I loved Winnie. She was exactly the type of character I would have loved at 16 and the type of character I can’t help but love now. I ordered the next book. I can’t wait to read it.
