Our Violent Ends
by Chloe Gong
*I used all my free listening hours on spotify on this book and it was not worth it*
I really wanted to like this book more, but it is probably 20 chapters too long. It would be better if the obstacles they faced were different, but all of them are exactly the same. I was bored with the insect plotline by the time the first book was over, and everything just dragged on forever. Marshall and Benedikt were easily the best part, but the payoff wasn’t good enough for me.
Another thing I tend to notice in Romeo and Juliet adaptions is that we never really find out what exactly they even like about each other. I get it, they’re in love, blah blah blah, but WHY? The books barely mention their history and barely seem to acknowledge that Roma and Juliette had 4 years to grow and change as people and don’t seem to get to know each other at all after that time.
There were a few gasp-worthy moments towards chapter 30-35, but after that, it really needed to end. I found that I wasn’t interested in if they were going to get away because it took so long to get there. It’s hard to do Romeo and Juliet well in my opinion, and this second book especially just fell flat for me.
