“Real family’s the people who are there when you need ’em.”
“Not today, not no way, ’cause I’m tellin’ you now that I ain’t come to play”
“Every court is a horror movie setting at its core, where property matters more than human lives and justice gets measured in billable hours.”
I loved this book so much. I struggle with world-building sometimes so the first book was a little harder for me to get into but since I was already familiar going into the sequel, I enjoyed it from start to finish. It wasn't until I finished the first book that I learned the entire series started with a short story. I think I would have an easier time with book one if I would have read it. However, I'm so glad I stuck it out because I ended up absolutely loving this one.
My favorite part of this book, by far, was seeing all the different cities. It made me want so much from this series! I've been told Jemisin is a master at building immersive universes and this really hit that truth home. Her writing really draws you in and makes you want more.
My major critique is that it felt unfinished. There were so many subplots that I wish we could have seen more of. Most notably, I wanted to know about Manny's backstory and the foreshadowing about Chicago! But I, also, wanted to hear more about Bronca's new relationship and Brooklyn's mayoral race. The mayoral race, especially, felt like it wrapped up very quickly.
This series is so well-written and immersive. I highly recommend this author. This book has encouraged me to pick up Fifth Season sooner rather than later!
