This is basically a literary episode of the Twilight Zone. And it's a good one! I felt disappointed by the end but my criticisms have softened after having this realization. The expectations of political scope I was putting on the novel are somewhat outside what I would consider the standard ability of that kind of story in such a short frame. It sets out on its thing, and does it well. I'm not changing my rating to reflect that but I am less frustrated with the book.
