The first third of the book was very well-written and provided a great setup for what could have been a very inventive mystery novel. The middle third lagged and engaged in some hackish storytelling conventions. The final third was just about the most abysmally stupid reveal I've ever read followed by several chapters of groan-inducing melodrama. Ruined the whole book for me.  Let this book serve as a cautionary tale to authors: just because you think your readers won't see it coming doesn't mean it's a good idea.
