Quite a surprise! A feral, fiery, brutal and brilliant old style dark fairy tale. There is an underworld to the quite and peaceful little British villages, right under your nose, invisible, cruel and fascinating. There are people, born to inhabit this world, to fight and die in it without ever being noticed or having any kind of connection with ordinary law abiding folk. It's a dying world perhaps, but it is also a lot more vital, and the hot blood that runs in the veins of its people is readily shed, for sometimes there is just too much life to contain in a small fragile body.
Well written, dry and poetic in just the right measure.
Beautiful narration in audio version, too.
Liked it a lot better than the actual Booker prize winner to be honest.
