Lanzarote
by Michel Houellebecq
Sort of a prototype Houellebecq. You could play Houellebecqian bingo and win long before the halfway point of this 96 page novella.
The twist at the end (or perhaps, the narrator's lack of an emotional reaction to it) is clearly designed to shock but mostly just comes off as a writer trying to be controversial to drum up publicity. It's a technique he'd later perfect, but it doesn't amount to anything here.
