Return of the Rogue by Donna Fletcher

slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? N/A
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

2.0

This book was fine, but Cavan and Honora don’t really talk things through, and I didn’t really believe in their relationship development.

As characters they were fine, but I didn’t like how they interacted with each other. Cavan rejects or insults Honora, she gets hurt but after some time she decides that he’s not actually being insulting and so she loves him.

The book starts with Honora’s wedding to Artair, which is interrupted when Cavan comes back to the clan and Honora’s stepfather makes a big scene about Honora actually marrying the future laird and not Artair. And so, Cavan escapes the barbarians and returns to his clan, only to find out that he’s married.

The rest of the book was kind of boring in my opinion because it was mostly about Cavan thinking his wife is pathetic but attractive, but he thinks he’s not worthy of sleeping with her. Honora’s character supposedly grows, but I didn’t see when that happened (as most of the scenes with other characters, or scenes where Cavan trains Honora are in the background), only that at the end, she’s more confident.

There were a lot of other characters, but they’re never shown enough to see their personalities and their relationships with the main characters.

I’m probably not going to continue with this series, and I’m not sure if I want to try other books by this author.
