Sal by Mick Kitson

Heartbreaking really. A girl who runs from her family having been abused by her father to run and save her sister. They go into the mountains of Scotland and live with the Bear Grylls kind of skills the older girl has acquired to prepare for their escape.

Both parents are feckless- the mother is an alcoholic and so home life is a lot worse than having to avoid the dangers of the forest. Sal researches her survival skills well though and I actually think I may have picked up the odd tip here and there. The setting of the forest is eerily drawn and remain anonymous which adds to the mystery of the girls' location. I also liked how Sal told stories to her sister about historical tales of past survivors and warriors

A very dark and grim read - abuse, alcoholic mother, abusive father and two poor little girls who have to run away and try to survive in the wilderness.
