The Wizards of Once
by Cressida Cowell
Actual rating: 3.5 stars.
I'm so glad I picked this book up! It was very entertaining and interesting. (I totally hold that this is set in the same world as Cowell's HTTYD books.)
LIKES:
I loved the forest, with all the creepy descriptions. I definitely want to visit it if I get the chance!
I LOVE WISH AND XAR. Their relationship may not be heading towards romance, but I love both of the characters dearly. I liked how even though Xar didn't get his magic until LITERALLY the last page, he still was a good sport to Wish. And I RELATE to the clumsiness of Wish, and I wish I had her bravery.
Also, on that note, the PLOT TWIST?? WHOA, DID NOT SEE THAT ONE COMING. I AM SHOCKETH.
Of course, I loved Cressida Cowell's signature wit and humor. It always brings a smile to my face.
DISLIKES:
Okay, the drawings. I like the drawings, don't get me wrong! They added a whole new, fantastic element to the story! But . . . I mean, I read HTTYD, and it's the exact same drawing style as in that series, which kept throwing me off. Xar and Wish looked like Hiccup and Camicaze to my eyes. *shrugs*
I was also slightly uncomfortable with the whole "magic isn't necessarily bad" concept. Yes, I am aware the same type of thing is in Harry Potter. However, I feel that here, it was pushed onto the reader waaaayy too much.
(Also, remind me again: why did Wish steal the sword in the first place? I never really understood that.)
CONTENT:
None, I think? Obviously, there are witches and wizards, with only one of them presented as bad.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and I can't wait to pick up the next one! (Is it bad that I want Xar to go to the dark side?? XD) I just hope the whole magic thing isn't as pushed in book 2.
