adventurous challenging dark emotional inspiring reflective slow-paced

It is the phenomenal telling of one girl's journey from childhood to womanhood and every single obstacle, snare, roadblock, and challenge she's faced along the way. She hides nothing and instead bares the truth in all its ugly nakedness. The brutal narration of reality as experienced by the author can make some people uncomfortable--a reason fools cite for banning the book in lieu of facing the ways their own actions are reflected in this work. This specific ISBN is read by Maya Angelou herself, and though her narration is slow, it really shouldn't be read by any other.
