Sula
by Toni Morrison
“but my lonely is mine. now your lonely is somebody else’s. made by somebody else and handed to you. ain’t that something? a secondhand lonely.”
this book was a gut-punch. Morrison understands humanity and the complicated/uncompromising/unflinching nature of human beings in a manner i haven’t read before. the way she is able to craft such an intense and well-rounded story in less than 200 pages is mesmerizing to me. the only thing i would have wanted more of was longer time with sula and nell as kids and with sula while she’s away from the bottom (it would have been interesting to see what she saw and learned in her time at college, but i also understand how that would have forced the book to be much longer and introduce even more characters and plot points). overall, i found this to be an extremely moving and earnest story. the ending was brilliant. i cannot wait to continue to explore more or Morrison’s work.

i’ve never witnessed someone able to write a character as neutrally and with less condemnation as how Morrison writes Sula. absolutely brilliant.
