Horse by Geraldine Brooks

My aunt gave me this book knowing I would love it (she did) and I did! I grew up riding horses, watching horse races, and I heard of Lexington so to begin with I was intrigued. The story of the painting was fascinating and especially how the author weaved the story in various time periods about the painting and the skeleton. Since it is historical fiction I wasn't sure who were real people, until the back of the book where there is a synapsis of the characters which I appreciated.

I loved how the author weaved art, horses, and racism in America through three time periods. The back and forth to the 1850s-70s and contemporary time and showing the parallels of how racism affects black men (two of her main characters are a black man in the 1850s and one in contemporary times) then and still now.
