Cutie and the Beast Vol. 1 by Yuhi Azumi
1.0
This series is a 1-star only because the beefcake is well-drawn. Otherwise it would be 0.
This is the first series I have consistently rated as 1-star. My whole being was filled with cringe reading this story, and was the first series that made me feel old.
The premise got me interested, as there are too many shojo or josei manga series following princely characters. It was a refreshing idea to have a male protag who is a big teddy bear, and Kuga appeared to be. I am one hell of a sucker for teddy bear snuggly characters with grumpy expressions.
Following Momoka a love-struck 17 to 18-year-old, obsessed with pro-wrestling and a particular pro-wrestler who is none other than 29-year-old Kuga. I love a good age-gap romance, I do. However, I cannot stomach an age-gap romance where the younger protag is still legally classed as a child. If Momoka was 22, I would have fewer issues with this gap...
Momoka's peers paint her as refined and mature, but all I read is an immature, typical high-school fangirl who is drastically sheltered from reality. Kuga conveniently has never dated anyone quite like her and has never felt anything like this... blah, blah, blah. There is one sensible senpai in his team who says "Dude, don't - she's in high school my bro, it's not cool". The soundest advice ever given, which Kuga ignores. Give me a romance about that beefcake, please.
The end of the first volume concludes with a call-to-action fight between Kuga and Momoka's father for his daughter's hand in marriage (gross). This is a ridiculous proposal - he kissed her on the cheek, once, and exchanged some texts. I was rooting for Momoka's father to take him down by the end.
However, the series continues, and there's begrudging acceptance and respect for Kuga from Momoka's father and that was when I knew this series was utterly doomed. Her father is overly possessive, archaic, and toxic. The whole dynamic between these two men is disgusting. Momoka may be airheaded and needs guidance, but overprotective father tropes are horrid.
I despised this series with every fiber of my being. There's a 4th volume coming out, and I absolutely will be avoiding it like the plague.
