The Woman in the Dunes
by Kōbō Abe
The concept of being trapped in a strange town and forced to adapt is interesting, but the protagonist of the tale is less to be desired. He is creepy, spends way too long talking about his psychological venereal disease, and commits acts of sexual violence and harassment to the woman trying to help him. All for the sake of his, "survival". Don't read this unless you want to feel even more disgusted by men. I am now suspicious of the guy at the bookstore who told me this book was awesome.
