Onyx Storm

Update & Review - THERE WILL BE SPOILERS DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU ARE FINISHED
Firstly, I want to mention how much I loved the hype, the launch parties and how the release of this book felt like a huge community event.
Secondly, I really enjoyed Iron Flame. I loved the character development, the slightly slower paced plot and how Violet & Xaden seemed to take time to work through some issues rather than just skipping to 'I forgive you and everything is perfect again!', it felt more real to me.
However this book just didn't quite hit the same. I went into this without rereading FW or IF, I read a couple of summaries and listened to some podcasts to refresh and thought that would be sufficient.
Things I didn't enjoy so much:
- The first 7ish chapters, WHO ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE AND WHERE ARE ALL THESE LANDS? Super confusing and 80% of it turns out to be irrelevant (so far)
- So much travelling that is not on the map, confusing
- Violet's second signet reveal felt super underwhelming, it's been a huge talking point including Rebecca herself, I was just expecting more in that moment!
- The plot felt so similar to IF just swap out a few details, the whole of IF was around trust being an issue between Violet and Xaden, exchange it for control and it was the same back and forth for 400 pages
- Xaden being Venin is almost a complete non-issue except that they can't have sex, thousands of people are dying but okay cool
- Some of the language became repetitive and I lost count of how many times Xaden and Violet 'crashed together'
- The irids just sort of changed their mind??? Such a big moment earlier in the book was then just totally went back on itself
I did enjoy this book and I read it within the space of two days! I'm not a huge theory or overanalyising kind of reader so I was just ready to show up and enjoy the reading experience.
Things I did enjoy:
- The banter with the dragons as usual was great, I love the all of the mindspeak stuff. There was some excellent human banter as well!
- Violet wielding her lightning, yes you go girl
- Violet and Xaden seem pretty solid in terms of endgame and I am looking forward to seeing how they battle through whats to come.
- Mira, Brennan and Violet dynamic being a bit messy but them working through things
- I enjoyed the pace of the book, I felt it was generally quite fast
- The ending was a whirlwind and I was left confused but sort of in a good way??? There were a couple of cliffhanger tropes used, but I like them!
- I cried, I laughed and I am invested to see where this goes next
- I loved Dain in this book, REDEMPTION TOWN HERE WE COME
- So many laugh out loud moments (Ridoc!)
- The dedication <3
Overall I would give it a 3.5/5 as I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the first 2.
