I read this book to better understand the language divide that still exists in this country and all it did was teach me that I already do. It all just stems from bigotry, hatred of the other, religion, and toxic nationalism. I am surprised I made it through this incredibly long and droning, male-centric, sexist, racist read. It was painful. I hate that this country was founded and built by characters like those in this book, who speak soon poorly of the people to whom this land truly belongs. It’s just made me hate both sides of Canada’s colonizing spectrum more. I know it’s an old book but these terrible beliefs still exist in this time and it’s imbittering to understand that they just come from a bunch of awful white dudes with attitude problems.
Graphic: Misogyny, Racial slurs, Racism, Sexism, Toxic relationship, Xenophobia, Antisemitism, Religious bigotry, and Sexual harassment
Moderate: Death, Medical content, Death of parent, Colonisation, and War
