A lot of things to say and think about this book. On the one hand, the Ashkenazim Jewish experience is not one I relate to bring Arab Jewish, on the other hand – the general beats around Rachel and Miriam's lives were achingling familiar. The queer-loving apparition of Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel following Rachel throughout felt cherry-picked from the desperate efforts to find some sort of affirming presence when I was younger. The golem motif (my beloved). Food as a nurterer and torturer. The unlikable but ultimately sympathetic mess that is Rachel. The way Miriam's story winds down. It's a lot to unpack, but Milk Fed was a delightful read regardless.
