Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens
5.0

This may be my favorite Dickens novel to date. It is funny and heartbreaking and piercingly perceptive. The story is classic Dickens with a socially conscious, morally upright yet penniless protagonist thwarted at every turn by a grasping, conniving and morally corrupt man of power and wealth who also happens to be the young man's uncle. Although the story was written and is set in a time long gone, Dickens' keen understanding of man's motivations and character are as pertinent now as ever.
