Payback's a Witch by Lana Harper

2.0

I'm kind of sad about this one. I really wanted a fun witchy start to October but it fell pretty flat for me. I didn't like that some guy was basically the only reason our FMC wanted to throw away all of her magic, friends, and family (even though she tried saying it was about more than that, it really wasn't - at least it wasn't pushed as heavily as this guys impact was). I didn't like the FMC's attitude 90% of the time considering most of her issues were her own making/in her head. I didn't like the FMC's reluctance to change. The conflict between Talia and Emmy seemed surface level at best, it happened out of nowhere, super early in their relationship - like they weren't even together yet and already talking about where they were going to live, and it was resolved (?) super quickly. I liked the gauntlet competition. I found that aspect fun. I guess a lot of it was just super surface level, but not in a fun way, more so in a rushed way. The relationships weren't fully flushed out and any conflict our FMC, Emmy, had with anyone - especially her family and her best friend, she met with silence/ a hug and a crappy apology. Nothing really ever scratched the surface and I felt like more time could have been spent on relationships rather than the FMC constantly complaining about some aspect of her witchiness/lack thereof.
