The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
4.0
4 1/2 stars: The characters felt very authentic and the situations were presented honestly. It's a hard story to write and often hard to read, but a good reality check for most people in the country.
Why it didn't get 5 stars? Oddly enough, I felt like most of the characters followed stereotypes. The thugs, the "wigger", the blonde "racist", the black kids who are cool just by default. While these things are stereotypes for a reason, I think challenging these stereotypes would have strengthened her message and left less open for criticism.
I also wanted a little more editorial on the looting, property destruction and violence towards cops that was present in the story. While Starr throwing the gas canister back at the cops was a powerful moment, it is unrealistic that she didn't face justifiable criminal charges for this action.
