The Sea-Wolf by Jack London
4.0
62: The Sea-Wolf by Jack London
I am so very pleased to have finished my first read (ever) of this book but know that I will likely reading it at least one or two more times in the next several months, as it is the full-length literary work for the USAD (and thus WIAD) 2021-22 season.
Only knowing well (at all, maybe) Jack London's The Call of the Wild, I very much enjoyed this rather obscure, but I think completely of literary merit and APLit-valid seafaring--life- and work-faring--novel. There is so much good stuff in here!
For those who love the sea and boating/sailing, you will feel valued for the knowledge and expertise you already possess and bring to this great story, and for those of you who are less familiar, there's a whole lot of good stuff worthy to learn to also enjoy this great story.
Humphrey Van Wyden--a gentleman and avid reader, literary critic--is rescued by a seal-hunting schooner after a ferryboat accident in San Francisco Bay. This completely changes the direction/path/purpose of his life for some time to come. And it introduces him to Wolf Larsen, that schooner's captain, who does not realize how much he might learn from/value about Hump.
There's even some romance in here--the good old-fashioned kind of tension built through minds and writing that connects first, before faces or hearts do--for those who wish for/enjoy that.
I really enjoyed this book and encourage all who have not yet to read it...and then volunteer to help us read/score essays this fall (please). :)
