Catwoman Vol. 1: Copycats by Joëlle Jones

4.0

Grain of salt- I've barely read any DC, and my only knowledge of Catwoman before this comes from Anne Hathaway.

I enjoyed this a lot! The learning curve in understanding the plot/context wasn't too steep, but I don't think it would be too annoying if the reader had more info than I did. I adored the art, especially the coloring and the framing. I could just think this because I know Joelle Jones is heading the creative team, but the sexuality seems comfortably female-gaze-y, which I appreciate.

However, the treatment of other women in the story is... questionable. We see a lot of framing of femininity as deceptive or weak. This is just the first volume, though, so I'm reserving judgement. Catwoman is also fiercely feminine, which gives me hope that the story will develop to explore lots of complex women instead of falling into "not like other girls" femme fatale stuff.
