Wonder Woman Vol. 1: The Lies by Greg Rucka

5.0

There are four (big) reasons why this is amazing.

1. It’s Greg Rucka. He is by far my favorite Wonder Woman writer and one of my favorite writers period. His writing style is incredible, but his attention to character (especially Diana’s character) is how he really shines.

2. The history. The last couple weeks I’ve read every single major Wonder Woman run since George Perez. While reading this the first time (without any of that history/prior knowledge), it was a fun mystery but didn’t hit as hard as it did this time. I was SO invested because I had just read all of the stories that contradict and overwrite each other, so having that historical knowledge really made this all the more enjoyable.

3. How it’s collected. I remember loving this when it was coming out bi-weekly, but it was also definitely harder to follow along as every other issue was a prequel story. In trade format, they’ve collected them by story arc (so this collects issues 1, 3, 5, etc), and I think it reads better ultimately.

Edit: okay I take back what I just said. After rereading the Year One storyline, while both of these arcs stand alone (Year One especially is an incredible story by itself and a good intro to WW), they also definitely do play off of each other and reading them as they came out is probably the best. I do definitely stand by my like for reading this all at once, though. Because so much of the plot is intertwined and a mystery, reading it as it came out was slightly less enjoyable simply because I couldn’t always remember everything.

4. The art. Liam Sharp’s work here is SO incredible, and his detail works perfectly with the jungle setting and just the atmosphere in general.
