Sophie's Choice by William Styron
3.0

This really wasn't what I expected. This felt like a novel with 2 distinct parts- the first, the tale of the titular Sophie, a survivor of the WW2 concentrations camp and deals with her recovery post war, her troubled relationship with the mentally ill Nathan and the horrifying story of her life in the concentration camp, and her "choice". These were all aspects of the novel which were very good. It was easy to feel a deep empathy for her, and sympathise even when she made disastrous choices.

The other part of the novel focuses on the narrator who lives in the same building as Sophie and Nathan, and spends far far far too much time discussing his sex life and lack thereof. I would go as far to say that Stingo was a huge detriment to this novel, and I quickly found myself skimming those parts.

I think this would have been a much better novel at half the length, but I'm looking forward to checking out the movie adaptation.
