I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

challenging dark emotional hopeful medium-paced

5.0

this was so well written, the sentences so beautiful. her storytelling is amazing. although this took me ages to read, when I did read it I just wanted to keep reading. every chapter is its own little story of her early life, each one showing something about her and her community and her life as a young black girl in the south in the 1930s. full of the most well written concise but beautifully put lines, very honest, very awful to read at times, other times very hopeful and humorous. I just think this is a perfectly constructed book with each chapter being clearly a pivotal important moment in her growing up, big and small. she writes through her childhood self's voice so well, it captures her personality and everything so well. wonderful book!
