Horrid by Katrina Leno

3.0

“I think the important thing to realize, to try and remember, is that grief doesn’t have a rule book. You’re allowed to feel every emotion under the sun. You’re even allowed to invent new ones.” - Horrid, Katrina Leno

Horrid was at first, your typical horror novel. With all of your favorite horror cliches - characters move into a creepy old house, in a creepy old town that you just know has its secrets. But things quickly get interesting when you throw in the themes of grief, trauma, and mental health. The paranormal aspects of this book, while perfectly chilling, take more of a backseat, and through beautiful storytelling, we see family dysfunction, generational trauma, and rage-fueled grief. Katrina Leno finds the perfect balance of haunted house and mental illness, creating an atmospheric and spooky read. I can’t say that I cared too much for the ending though. It felt like something was missing, and just kind of let me down. But if you’re looking for a compelling thought-provoking, creepy read, definitely consider this one.
