The Voices of a Distant Star by Makoto Shinkai, Mizu Sahara

5.0

I picked this up for a very light and quick read and while it was a quick read I wouldn't call it light by the end.

I'm a sucker for science fiction where the most science fiction element about the story is the backdrop of the world (probably why I like mecha so much, but I digress) and the focus is on the characters, their arcs, their relationships. Voices of a Distant Star delivers that wonderfully, and honestly a bit painfully with how Mikako and Noburo handle their literal galactic separation from each other. The ways in which they hold on to each other, and the ways in which they grow apart only to find their way back to the other emotionally made this a keenly romantic read, though not in the way I think a lot of people would expect.
